Stevie

I turned the bottles and studied the labels. There had to be something that could help alleviate Moira’s symptoms and if not, at least we had a considerable supply of medicine we could take with us going forward.

There wasn’t a name on the labels that I recognized. The only drug I was familiar with was the antidepressant my mom had taken a few of on a daily basis.

A weakness moved through my body and my stomach clenched. The back of my neck felt hot and my thighs tingled.

Sweat beaded up on my temples. I realized what was happening with only seconds to spare. I turned and released the contents of my stomach into the toilet.

“Dammit,” I said wiping my mouth with the back of my hand.

Fatigue slapped me across the face. I weakly stood, knocking over one of the prescription bottles I had set on the edge of the sink.

Pounding at the door thudded through my skull.

“Stevie,” Gage said. “Everything okay in there?”

“Yeah,” I lied picking the pill bottle up off of the floor.

I leaned forward over the sink, breathing in slowly between my pursed lips. It felt like the room was filling with a thick, soupy fog.

“Just looking through the medicine,” I said.

I tried to take a step toward the door but my legs gave out and I crashed to the floor. My arms felt like spaghetti as I tried to get back on my feet.

With all the walking, being soaked, and lack of healthy, nutritious foods, my body was already run down. My eyelids felt heavy.

It was a distant sound but I could hear a boom-boom-boom against the door. The sound vibrated through my body, making my stomach slosh around like a washing machine.

“Stevie!” Gage’s voice cut through the haze.

“I’m fine,” I said but I wasn’t sure the words had made it out of my mouth.

The tile floor was cool against the bare skin on my arms and the walls started to darken. My surroundings bled into blackness.

When my eyes opened again, I was lying near the fire. I felt like I’d been hit by a truck.

“Ugh,” I groaned.

“Hey,” Gage said softly. “I was worried about you… still am, to be honest.”

I moaned and rolled onto my other side, desperate to get comfortable. And desperate not to get sick again because I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it to the toilet.

There was a hand on my shoulder. I wanted to stay awake… talk to Gage… but everything faded away.

I woke up abruptly, coughing heavily. If there had been anything inside my belly, it wouldn’t have stayed there.

Gage came up next to me with a bottle of water. “Here,” he said placing his hand on my back. “Take a drink.”

I sipped the water, wincing as if I’d taken a shot of vodka. I shook my head but Gage kept the bottle near my mouth.

“Gotta stay hydrated,” Gage said smiling at me.

“Okay,” I said my voice scratching deep in my throat.

“Gage,” Brooklyn said. She was somewhere behind him.

I couldn’t see her but I could sense the urgency in her voice.
